Estate and Family Records

As the majority of Ayrshire's population was rural rather than urban until the mid 19th century, these records are often a useful source for family historians. The records can contain estate rentals with tenants' names, farm names, etc., muster rolls ( for volunteer forces ), rotation books with tenants' names, dates, crops grown, etc. All the major Ayrshire Estates are in the National Archives for Scotland, including:-

Dalrymple of Stair
Cassillis
Eglinton Estate

The following records are held At the Ayrshire Archives :-

The Welbeck Estates ( 4th Duke of Portland ) 1798 - 1900
The Hamiltons of Roselle and Carluie 1734 - 1926
The Kennedy's of Kirkmichael 1453 - 1832
The Wodburn Family of Monkton 1795 - 1903
