Extract
from the 1820 Irvine Census
For
the purpose of the Census the town and parish of Irvine and Halfway was divided
into sections or “quarters”. The
introduction has a list of sections showing the area it covered and also the
name of the deacon who recorded the information.
In
addition to the information contained in the index, the census also shows the
occupation and religion of the family head and the total number of males and
females living in the house. Additional
remarks on character or appearance are also sometimes given.
Some
Quarters/Sections have ‘Notes’ pages which are “reports by the deacon of
that district of the town and parish of Irvine, of the poor with badges, also of
those receiving regular or occasional relief, and of those likely to require
relief.”
